【梗概】
 本書は、生成文法のミニマリストプログラムにおけるフェイズ理論の理論的問題点を指摘し解決することにより、フェイズ理論のさらなる発展に貢献するものである。
 生成文法は、人間言語における普遍文法の特性を解明するという目標のもと、現在ではミニマリストプログラムと呼ばれる研究局面に至り、様々な発展を遂げてきた。特に2000年代から現在にいたるまで研究されている「フェイズ理論」では、更なる理論的、説明的進展が得られている。しかしながら、現行のフェイズ理論には、Chomsky (2001)で議論され、その後議論がなされていない弱フェイズに関して、理論的な問題点がある。本書ではこの問題点を「弱フェイズの矛盾」と名付け、Chomsky (2008)が提案したFeature-Inheritanceを拡張した、「Feature-Transcription」の枠組みのもと、解決策を提示する。またここでの提案は、現行のミニマリストプログラム(特にChomsky (2008)のフェイズ主要部駆動型の枠組み)で導くことが困難な「選択性」を、独立した二つの経済性の観点から導くことができるという利点を有している。従って本書は、弱フェイズに関する理論的議論と、選択性に基づいた通言語的な経験的議論の二つの部分から構成されている。
 本書前半の1-3章は理論的議論がメインとなる。1章は導入であり、本研究の位置づけを概説している。2章では、本研究の理論的背景である素性照合、フェイズ理論、解釈不可能素性とFeature-Inheritance、A/Aバー移動の概念を概観する。3章では、本書のメインテーマとなる弱フェイズの矛盾とその解決策を提示する。具体的には、伝統的に弱フェイズとされるvPが、A/Aバー移動に関してフェイズであるとも非フェイズであるとも分析できないという矛盾点を指摘し、弱フェイズという概念の想定が必要であることを論じる。その後、通常のフェイズである強フェイズの主要部から弱フェイズの主要部への活性化操作の想定によりこの矛盾が解決されることを示し、Feature-Transcriptionという操作を提案する。また、この想定のもと、転送領域の広さと転送操作の回数に関する経済性が拮抗するという観点から、「同時的派生」と「個別的派生」という二種類の派生の可能性が導かれることを示し、本書独自の格付与メカニズムと組み合わせることにより、これらの派生の可能性が様々な選択的な文法現象の説明に用いられることを示す。
 4章以降は経験的議論に焦点を当てる。まず4章では動詞句的弱フェイズに関わる諸現象を扱う。具体的には、スカンディナビア言語に見られる屈折と移動の関係性、Chomsky (2001)が指摘した英語のTh/Ex、日本語のヲ格/ガ格交替とそのスコープ解釈に関わる現象、英語の二重目的語構文に関わる現象を扱う。5章では節的弱フェイズについて考察する。英語のアイルランド方言のECM構文に見られる遊離数量詞の振る舞いや、日本語の目的語繰り上げ構文におけるガ格/ヲ格交替、西フラマン語の補文標識一致が対象となる。6章では前置詞句的弱フェイズを議論する。この章では、ミニマリストプログラムで近年注目を集めている「Labeling Algorithm」が、本書の弱フェイズの枠組みのもとでどのような帰結を導くのかを探求し、「付加詞の島」の説明の可能性を提示する。現象としては、英語の左方移動における前置詞残置/随伴の選択性、右方移動における前置詞残置の不可能性を扱う。また本章の最後では「Edge Feature」について詳細な考察を行う。最終章である7章では、これらの議論を総括し、弱フェイズの議論の重要性と、Feature-Transcriptionの妥当性について再確認する。
